I acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waters on which we work and create. I pay my respects to Indigenous Elders past, present and emerging. I respectfully recognise that sovereignty was never ceded. "Australia" always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.

Reflections

Short riffs on work, life, and the patterns that shape both.

Free agent

Someone quotes your own words back at you.
Something you wrote years ago. Something you no longer believe.

The instinct is to defend it.
To pretend continuity matters more than clarity.

But you're not a statue.
You're allowed to move.

We treat past opinions like territory.
Ground we must hold or lose face.

But the ego isn't seeking truth.
It's seeking consistency. And those aren't the same thing.

When someone shows you a flaw in your thinking, they're not attacking you.
They're offering you an upgrade.

The embarrassment isn't changing your mind.
It's clinging to a version of yourself that no longer fits.

You're a free agent.
Act like one.

Borrowed time

You notice your breathing sometimes.
In the quiet between tasks. After the walk. When sleep hasn't arrived yet.

It just keeps going.
No reminder needed. No effort asked.

The body borrows its shape from time.
Muscles soften. Joints complain. The edges blur.

Breath borrows too.
Each one arriving on terms you didn't write.

But the mind?
That one's yours. Free and clear.

Strange how we renovate everything except the thing we actually own.
We polish surfaces that were never ours to keep.

Maybe the real investment is simpler.
Guard the thoughts. Tend the attention.

The rest is just on loan.

The chorus

Somewhere down the street a mower starts.
Then another. Then yours.

Nobody planned it.
Nobody called ahead.

But within the hour the whole block hums.

One engine.
Then two.
Then a chorus.

No conductor.
No sheet music.
Just neighbours tuning in to the same frequency.

We're more synced than we admit.
Not by clocks or calendars.
By the quiet cues we take from each other.

Funny how we find the same rhythm.
Even alone in our backyards.

Table stakes

Family dinner. Someone says something you disagree with.
The counter-argument rises. Ready.

You could say it.
You might even be right.

But right and worth it are not the same thing.

Some conversations are invitations to drain yourself.
To trade warmth for a verdict no one asked for.

You can hold your position without holding court.

The table stays full when you let small things pass.
Not because they don't matter.
Because the people do.

Being right is easy.
Being close is harder.

Pick accordingly.

A checkbox

Someone at the counter asked me a question with an obvious answer.
I felt offended. Slightly insulted.

Like they hadn't been paying attention.
Like they thought I was an idiot.

Then I walked away and it hit me.
They weren't asking because they needed to know.
They were asking because their screen wouldn't let them move on without it.

A dropdown. A required field. An audit trail.

The question was never for them.
It was never really for me either.

I got offended by a checkbox.
The only person who made it personal was me.

Red lights

Three red lights in a row.
The universe is clearly against me.

By the time I get home I've built a whole story.
The city's broken. The timing's rigged. Nothing works.

But I didn't count the greens.

Straight through. No thought.
They don't ask to be noticed so they don't get noticed.

We keep a tally no one asked for.
The reds get written down. The greens get nothing.

And we wonder why the score looks so grim.

The lights aren't out to get you.
You drove the whole way angry at one that had already changed.

Having a self

You're about to say no.
The word is right there. Ready.

Then the voice arrives.
That's selfish.

Funny how it never speaks when you give too much.
Only when you're about to stop.

We've been taught that selfless means good.
So selfish became a weapon.

A way to keep you agreeable.
Available.
Spread thin across priorities that were never yours.

Declining isn't cruelty.
Choosing is not theft.

The voice calls it selfish because you're acting like you matter.

You do.

That's not selfishness.
That's just having a self.

The scoreboard

A throwaway comment from a meeting I barely remember.
Still running laps in my head three days later.

Meanwhile the phone call that made my week got a nod and a coffee.

The scoreboard's broken.

Small slights rack up points. Quiet wins barely register.
I'm tracking a game no one else is playing.

If I saw the real numbers I'd be embarrassed.
Hours spent on what deserved minutes.
Minutes spent on what deserved hours.

The things that matter aren't loud.
I just need to stop rewarding the noise.

Worth it

You're hovering over the cancel button again.
Running the maths on cost-per-episode.

It's twelve bucks a month.
You've spent longer deciding than the subscription costs.

Somewhere you picked up the idea that rest should be free.
That if it doesn't solve a problem it's waste.

But a show after a long day isn't indulgence.
A playlist on the drive home isn't excess.
It's just life having a bit of texture.

Not everything needs to earn its place.
Some things just make the week liveable.

Keep the subscription.
Cancel the guilt.

Opt out

Someone says something.
It lands in your chest before you've even processed the words.

The hook is already in.

But here's what nobody tells you.
You can take it out.

Not by arguing. Not by winning.
By deciding it doesn't apply.

Harm needs your participation.
The story you add. The meaning you assign. The loop you replay.

Without those, it's just noise.

The hook was never the problem.
Holding on was.
