I acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waters on which we work and create. I pay my respects to Indigenous Elders past, present and emerging. I respectfully recognise that sovereignty was never ceded. "Australia" always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.

Reflections

Short riffs on work, life, and the patterns that shape both.

Interest rate

You wake before the alarm and lie there doing the sums.

The night was good. Better than good.
You remember the date and the second bottle and the round you insisted on buying.

Now the head is thick.
The morning belongs to the recovery, not to you.

Nobody warns you that pleasure runs on credit.

The treat felt free at the table.
You pay for it here, in the hours you meant to use.
In the workout you'll skip. In the version of today you traded for last night.

Moderation was never about the drink.
It's about who owns tomorrow.

Enjoy the splurge.
Just read the interest rate before you sign.

Calendar amnesia

When every day is a task list, weeks vanish without a trace. Presence isn't about doing less. It's about noticing more.

False start

The shops are open again.
Inbox badges reappear.
Someone casually asks what you’re doing next.

It’s Boxing Day.
Nothing has actually begun.

But urgency has a habit of arriving early.
It dresses itself up as motivation.
It pretends the pause is over before it’s had a chance to work.

These days sit in between.
Not quite holiday. Not quite normal.
They’re a buffer the year quietly gives you.

There’s no prize for restarting first.
No reward for dragging momentum forward before it’s ready.
Some rest only counts if you let it finish.

The grind can wait.
The lists will still be there tomorrow.

Just because the calendar flips doesn’t mean the engine has to start.

Energy check

Some days it’s easy to say yes to the small things.

They look harmless. They fit neatly in the gaps.
But stacked together they drain you.

There’s a steadier way to shape a day.
A pause. A breath. One honest question.

Where does my energy belong today?

Because time is not the same as capacity.
And the work that matters needs you whole.

Clarity grows when you place your energy with intention.

Small improvements

Three hot days on the road and I couldn’t work out why I felt so off. My lips cracked, my throat ached, my skin felt coated in dust.

Then something clicked. Maybe it’s the aircon. Maybe my car has a filter that needs changing.

Turns out it never had a filter. The air I’d been breathing was recycled dust.

40 minutes, one YouTube video, and a $25 filter later, the difference was instant. The air felt fresh again.

It made me realise how many little things sit just below our awareness. Each one quietly stealing comfort, focus, or peace.

You don’t have to overhaul your life. Just keep spotting the small fixes that make it better to live in.

Early calm

I was up early. The supermarket lights still waking.
Outside, the sky was alive with colour. Hot air balloons drifting, sunlight spilling across quiet streets.

Everything moved slow. The air felt light.

Soon I’ll merge into peak hour, where everyone’s chasing somewhere to be.

But for a moment, I saw what the day could feel like before the rush decided for it.

Like magic still had space to breathe.

Renewal

After rain, the ground softens.
You can feel the earth exhale.

Everything needs renewal.
Ideas fade when they never leave the page.
The body dulls without challenge.
Even stillness grows heavy if it lasts too long.

Energy moves where there’s space to flow.

Stagnation isn’t rest. It’s decay.

Full steam ahead

This week was chaos. I got plenty done, but it felt like sprinting through fog.
Every task blurred into the next, and somewhere in the noise I lost sight of what mattered.

Progress doesn’t always look like motion.

Sometimes it’s the moment you stop, breathe, and realise you’ve been running past your own work.

Stillness shows what speed can’t. Maybe it's worth taking a breath.

Small pleasures

I stayed up too late watching something stupid.
No lesson in it. No productivity hack. Just laughter and stillness for a moment.

We spend so much time chasing better habits that we forget the joy that built them.
A late night. A silly snack. A pointless scroll that somehow resets the mood.

Discipline needs oxygen too.

The current

Some days the current carries you. Words fall into place, ideas unfold without effort.
Other days it’s like dragging a boat uphill. Every line fights back.

The current decides more than we think.

When the flow is there, ride it.
When it’s gone, stop pushing. Let the water find its way again.
