I acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waters on which we work and create. I pay my respects to Indigenous Elders past, present and emerging. I respectfully recognise that sovereignty was never ceded. "Australia" always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.

Reflections

Short riffs on work, life, and the patterns that shape both.

Thrive together

I saw a sticker on a crossing pole. Just two words: thrive together.

It made me think how rare that is in practice. We chase independence like it’s the goal. But most things that grow do it in clusters. Trees. Ideas. People.

The strongest roots are often the ones intertwined.

Missed signs

You see something small. A car creeping out too far. A friend’s tone slightly off. A gut feeling that flickers, then fades.

You tell yourself it’s nothing. You move on.

Then what you feared happens. And deep down, you knew.

Intuition doesn’t shout. It whispers once and waits.

Where are you holding back when you already know?

Near Miss

A car pulled out in front of me.
Reflexes took over. A quick swerve. Tyres caught. Silence.

For a moment I waited for the crash that never came.
Then I breathed.

Usually, my mind would loop the what-ifs.
Replay the fear. Build a story that never happened.

But this time felt different.
For once, I didn’t hold on to the fear.
Just the relief.

It’s easy to obsess over what could’ve gone wrong.
Harder to stay grateful for what didn’t.

The Long Way

Someone pointed out I could drive there. Another said I could walk across the oval.
Both were right. Both faster.

But the longer path curved beneath trees. Birds flickered between branches. Flowers lined the edge.

I realised how quickly I look for shortcuts, even when there’s nothing to save.
Not every path is meant to be optimised. Some are meant to be enjoyed.

Small pleasures

I stayed up too late watching something stupid.
No lesson in it. No productivity hack. Just laughter and stillness for a moment.

We spend so much time chasing better habits that we forget the joy that built them.
A late night. A silly snack. A pointless scroll that somehow resets the mood.

Discipline needs oxygen too.

Catching up

Sometimes we move faster than we can feel.
The body keeps pace. The soul lags behind.

You notice it in small ways. Rushing through meals. Skipping pauses. Chasing what’s next before what’s now has settled.

Maybe stillness isn’t wasted time.
Maybe it’s just you, waiting for yourself to arrive.

Same road

There’s a calm that only shows up when you realise you’re not the only one finding your way.

Someone else facing the same uncertainty.
Someone else reading the same quiet signals.

You don’t need to lead to feel sure.
Sometimes it’s enough to know you’re moving together.

Last song

A magpie calls across the dusk.
One last warble before the night settles in.

It doesn’t care what the day produced.
Whether nests were built or just imagined.

It sings, then rests.
Because that’s the rhythm.

Rest isn’t earned. It’s natural.

The current

Some days the current carries you. Words fall into place, ideas unfold without effort.
Other days it’s like dragging a boat uphill. Every line fights back.

The current decides more than we think.

When the flow is there, ride it.
When it’s gone, stop pushing. Let the water find its way again.

Systems beat motivation

That quiet guilt creeps in.

I should write more.

I should apply for jobs.

It sounds productive but it just stalls you.

Systems don’t argue. They act.

I’ll write once a day.

I’ll apply for two jobs.

No pressure. Just a rhythm to follow.

You don’t rise to motivation.

You fall to the level of your systems.
