I acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waters on which we work and create. I pay my respects to Indigenous Elders past, present and emerging. I respectfully recognise that sovereignty was never ceded. "Australia" always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.

Raw material

"I was just born this way."

We say it like the case is closed.
Like the diagnosis is also the sentence.

But nobody arrived patient.
Nobody came out of the womb with their arrogance already trimmed.

The people who actually changed had the same raw material.
Imperfect parents. Bad examples. The same fires.

They didn't wait for fairer conditions.
They just decided not to stay who they were.
Not in one moment.
Every ordinary day.

Same starting line.
Different decisions.

The streak

We complain like difficulty is a surprise.
Like something went wrong.

But look at the line you come from.
Every famine. Every plague. Every war that redrew the map.

Someone with your blood made it through each one.
Not by accident.
By being the kind of person who finds a way.

The ones who folded didn't become ancestors.
The ones who kept going did.

You're not randomly here.
You're the latest result of a very long unbroken streak.

Think about that next time a Saturday feels like too much.

Still calling

The red-tailed black cockatoo didn't show.

Hours of driving. A cold night.
Scanning treelines. Listening between calls.
Every branch a false start.

The frustration was honest.
I'd earned the right to it.

But the sky at dusk was real.
Every other bird still calling.
The distance from everything ordinary.

The bird wasn't the weekend.
It was just the reason I went.

Small actions

Somewhere upstream, a server farm hums through the night.
A ship crosses the Pacific carrying things nobody needs.
A forest thins so a suburb can stretch.

None of it asked for your permission.
So what can you actually give back?

Not a revolution. Not a fix.
Just a tilt in how you move through the day.

Less arriving at your door.
More seeds planted in the soil.

The earth doesn't need a hero.
It needs a million small shifts adding up.

You can't save it alone.
But your actions still count.

The scale

You step outside.
Head back. Eyes slowly adjusting.

The stars don't care what kind of day you had.
They were burning long before your problems existed.
They'll burn long after.

From here everything feels urgent.
The deadline. The doubt. The noise.

From up there it's already dust.

We forget how small we are.
Not in a sad way. In a freeing way.

The sky doesn't shrink your worries to mock you.
It just shows you the scale you forgot.

Look up more often.
Not for answers. For proportion.

Unchecked

Every box ticked.
Inbox clear. Week productive.

You scroll through the list and feel that small hit of done.
But somewhere in the back of your head, a name surfaces.

A friend you've been meaning to call.
Six weeks now. Maybe seven.

The list never asked you to reach out.
It didn't schedule catch-ups or leave room for the people who matter.
It just kept adding tasks that felt more urgent.

We plan our days so tightly there's no space for what can't be measured.
Connection doesn't come with a deadline.
So it waits. And waits. And eventually stops asking.

The cruelest part of productivity is what it leaves out.

A full list and an empty week can look exactly the same.

Thanks bud

I said it without thinking.
Camera still warm. Shot captured.

"Thanks bud."

The magpie tilted his head.
Then warbled. Soft and quick.
Almost like a "you're welcome."

I stood there longer than I needed to.
Not because I believed he understood.
But because for a second, something landed.

We spend so much energy trying to be seen.
Crafting messages. Choosing words.
Hoping the right person finally gets it.

And here's a bird on a fence post.
No context. No history.
Just a small sound that felt like acknowledgment.

Maybe communication isn't about precision.
Maybe it's about presence.

Some of the clearest exchanges don't use words at all.

Same sky

You had plans.
Outdoor ones. The good kind.

Then the clouds rolled in and cancelled everything.

You watch the rain and feel cheated.
Like the weather owed you something.

But somewhere across the city, a farmer watches the same sky with relief.
Months of dry earth finally drinking.

Your frustration and his gratitude falling from the same clouds.

The sky doesn't pick sides.
It doesn't know your calendar. Doesn't care about your mood.
It just gives.

We forget we're not the only ones receiving.
That what lands wrong for us might land right for someone else.

The universe isn't personal.
It's shared.

Your inconvenience might be someone else's answered prayer.
Same sky. Different stories.

Simple things

A sunset can stop you in your tracks.
A single eucalyptus can settle your whole chest.

It’s wild how often we look for more than we need.
More plans more progress more reasons to feel grounded.
Yet the smallest scenes are the ones that actually land.

Sometimes it only takes one quiet moment to steady you again.
A soft sky. A tall tree. A breath that finally reaches the bottom.

Stillness isn’t rare. We just forget to look for it.

Bad news

I used to think ravens were against me.
They always showed up when something felt off. I took it as a curse.

But today they guided me away from traffic, calling out turns I shouldn’t take.
Their presence wasn’t punishment. It was protection.

Maybe they were never the bad omen.
Maybe I just didn’t want to hear their bad news.
