You kept it

Give something away and for a second it's genuinely gone.
No name on it. No trace of you.

Then you notice what you did.

And the noticing pulls it back.
The good feeling turns around and settles on you instead of them.

Which is why you can still list them.
The time you covered for someone.
The message you sent when you were flat out yourself.
Nobody asked you to keep those.
You did.

A gift you can still recite was never handed over. It was lent.

None of it was fake.
It just stopped being theirs the second you wanted it back.

The exception

Most things shrink when you get them.

The promotion becomes a title and a heavier inbox.
The money becomes a number you stop noticing.
The win lasts a week and then it's just the thing you did.

We keep chasing anyway.
Assuming the next one will hold its size.

There is one exception.

Justice. Honesty. Discipline. Courage.

Nobody arrives at these and finds less than they were promised.
They give back more than they cost.
And they don't come in portions.

Virtue is the only thing you either have or you don't.

Unread shelf

There's a bookshelf in my room that looks impressive from the doorway.
Spines cracked once, then never again.
Bookmarks stuck at page forty, marking the exact point I stopped reading.

For years I thought the goal was to finish them.
Get through the pages so you could quote the right line at dinner.

But finishing was never the test.
I could tell you every date, every name, every plot twist, and still walk away having learned nothing at all.
None of that ever changes you. The lesson does.

Perseverance.
The cost of pride.
How easily a person gets pulled off course.

You can finish every book on that shelf and still be the same person who picked it up.

Reading isn't the assignment.
Changing is.

Worth it

You're hovering over the cancel button again.
Running the maths on cost-per-episode.

It's twelve bucks a month.
You've spent longer deciding than the subscription costs.

Somewhere you picked up the idea that rest should be free.
That if it doesn't solve a problem it's waste.

But a show after a long day isn't indulgence.
A playlist on the drive home isn't excess.
It's just life having a bit of texture.

Not everything needs to earn its place.
Some things just make the week liveable.

Keep the subscription.
Cancel the guilt.

They heard

I got home and walked outside.

Asked where my animal friends were.

Within seconds six magpies flew low.
Close enough to feel the air shift.

They circled once.
Landed on the grass in front of me.

Then they began to warble.

Not at me exactly. But near me.

We forget we're part of something.
That connection doesn't require language.
That showing up is sometimes enough.

You speak to the world and most days it stays silent.

But sometimes it answers.

Not with words.
With wings.
With a sound that says we heard you.

The figure inside

Michelangelo said he didn't create the sculpture.
He just removed what didn't belong.

The figure was already inside the marble.
Waiting.

Most of us treat our lives the opposite way.
We keep adding.
More plans. More options. More reasons to wait.

But the work you were made for isn't missing.
It's buried.

Under years of fear dressed as caution.
Guilt dressed as duty.
Indecision dressed as keeping options open.

You don't need more material.
You need less noise.

Patience

Traffic crawls. The clock ticks louder than it should.
Nothing is moving the way you planned.

Patience gets framed as endurance. Sitting still. Holding your tongue.
But it’s quieter than that. It’s the moment you stop arguing with reality.

You notice the breath.
You remember the meeting will end.
You realise this delay won’t matter tomorrow.

Patience is choosing ease over urgency.
Peace over panic.
The present moment over the story your mind is trying to finish early.

Most of what rattles us is temporary.
We just forget that while we’re inside it.

Patience doesn’t fix the problem.
It stops the problem from running you.

Gold trail

When I was a kid I showed my dad a magic trick with a gold coin. I made it vanish.
The wild part is it never came back. Not in my hands at least.

Yet for years I’ve found gold coins in the strangest places.
Footpaths. Car parks. Random pockets.
Like the trick kept echoing long after the moment passed.

Maybe some things don’t disappear.
They just choose new ways to return.

Running late

I watched the clock hit 1pm and felt that drop in my stomach.
The big task I planned to finish by now is still open.
A project I care about. A deadline I set.
The pressure hit hard.

It’s wild how fast the mind turns a late milestone into a judgement.
Not just "I’m behind."
More like "I’m failing."
That slide into frustration happens before you even notice it.

But a personal deadline isn’t a verdict.
It’s a marker on a path you chose.
You can shift it without breaking anything.
You can slow down without losing the work.

The task is still the task.
The day is still wide open.
You’re not failing. You’re adjusting.

To see all

Last night I saw a number plate: 2CE6LL.
I read it as to see all.

Lately I’ve been questioning my purpose. Wondering what I’m meant to do.
But maybe it’s not about doing at all.

Maybe my purpose is to see… completely.
To notice the small patterns, the connected movements, the way everything ripples through everything else.

We’re not separate from the wave. We are the wave, learning to see itself.

The more I pay attention, the more the universe feels less like a puzzle and more like a mirror.

I acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waters on which we work and create. I pay my respects to Indigenous Elders past, present and emerging. I respectfully recognise that sovereignty was never ceded. "Australia" always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.
