Offsets

I acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waters on which we work and create. I pay my respects to Indigenous Elders past, present and emerging. I respectfully recognise that sovereignty was never ceded. "Australia" always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.

Already smiling

I walked out tonight already glad.
The next chapter has started and it feels right.

I wasn't looking for a sign.
My mind was made up.

Then I looked up.
A thin crescent tipped over on its back.
The whole thing shaped like a smile.

It told me nothing I didn't know.

It agreed.

The moon is only a few days into this phase.
So am I.

Every time

You've been here before.
Not this exact trouble but this exact feeling.
The one where you can't see how it resolves.

And it resolved.

Not neatly. Not on your schedule.
But you're on the other side of it now, telling the story like you always knew.
You didn't know. Nobody knows in the middle.

That's the part worth keeping.
Things work out.
And you have never once been able to see it coming.

So the dread about how this one ends is running on the same faulty instrument it ran on every other time.

Feels like this one's different?
It always does. It never is.

Choose simple

You imagine the simple life as a place you'll move to one day.
Somewhere with fewer things owed and a morning that isn't already chasing you.

So you wait for the calendar to clear before you start living it.

But simple was never the empty day coming later.
It's this one, done without wandering off.

One task finished before the next begins.
One conversation you don't half-listen through.
One evening you let be an evening.

The catch is it asks more of you, not less.
Clearing the noise takes a steadier hand than adding to it.

You're not far from the simple life.
You keep postponing it, then filling the wait.

Start it now.
Then do it again tomorrow.

Into the maze

Before the first step you draw the map.

You don't want to get lost.
So you mark the detours. The dead ends.
Add corridors for the trouble you haven't met yet.

Somewhere it stops being a map.
Starts looking more like a maze.

Then the actual work arrives.
Simpler than anything on the map.
One thing to do. Then another.

You're through it without the map.
Fold it. Pocket it.
The elaborate parts never used.

You didn't get lost.
Just took a long time to leave.

Loosen the grip

You yank at the knot and it tightens.
So you pull harder. Teeth clenched.

Now it's worse.

Every difficult thing works this way.
The more force you throw at it the more it resists.

We call it persistence.
It's just frustration that hasn't quit yet.

The knot doesn't care how annoyed you are.
It responds to one thing only. Slack.

Loosen the grip. Give it room to breathe.
Suddenly the tangle has space to move.

All that effort.
And the answer was to let go.

More than enough

The lemon tree drops fruit on the ground.
More than anyone could use.

The wildflowers don't stop at a dozen.
They fill the whole field like someone forgot to set a limit.

We're told to want less.
To shrink the ask. To call it holy.

But look outside.
Nature doesn't do minimalism.

Seeds scatter by the thousand.
Rivers don't ration their flow.
The sun doesn't dim itself to seem humble.

Somewhere we confused spirituality with scarcity.
As if the universe was running out.

It's not.

Overflow was always the design.
Scarcity was the lie we added.

Walk away

You're about to push back.
Same energy. Same language. Same low.

It feels justified. They started it.
So now you're allowed.

But matching them doesn't settle anything.
It just pulls you closer to who they are.

The cleanest exit isn't a comeback.
It's refusing to play.

No explanation. No final word.
Just distance.

You don't owe them a mirror.
You owe yourself the door.

Be the proof

You can’t talk people into changing.
Pressure hardens.
Shame closes doors.

People shift when staying the same starts to hurt.
When the cost becomes theirs.

The quiet move is example.
Change your habits.
Raise your standards.
Let the work show.

Results travel further than words.

Next play

You drop the ball.
Miss the shot.
Say the wrong thing.

Your mind wants to rewind.
To replay the mistake.
To fix what’s already gone.

But the game keeps moving.

Athletes know this well.
The last play is done the moment it ends.
Carry it forward and it costs you the next one too.

Life works the same way.
Mistakes. Wins. Awkward moments.
None of them deserve permanent residence in your head.

Everyday wizardry

I swipe my finger at the boom gate and it lifts. Just a camera scanning plates, but it feels like wizardry.

The wave of a finger is enough to turn ordinary into magic.

Sometimes it stalls. Maybe I fumbled the spell.

What else could we choose to see that way?

The phone in your pocket, the water flowing at a tap, the voice message that travels across oceans in seconds.

Everyday wizardry is everywhere. It’s only invisible because we stop looking.
