I acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waters on which we work and create. I pay my respects to Indigenous Elders past, present and emerging. I respectfully recognise that sovereignty was never ceded. "Australia" always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.

Reflections

Short riffs on work, life, and the patterns that shape both.

Whole hour

We keep part of ourselves back.
We call it sensible.

A little effort for the work.
A little attention held for later.

But half-hearted work still takes the whole hour.
The clock does not move differently.

We cannot give everything to everything.
Some things need a clean no.
Not a reluctant yes.

Wholeheartedness is not constant intensity.
It is being present for what we chose.

The hour passes either way.
We might as well be there for it.

Fast yes

Someone is still explaining and the yes is already out.
It sounds like decisiveness.

Fast reads as capable.
Slow reads as difficult.

So we answer at speed and call it good manners.

But nothing was weighed.
We didn't choose that one. We just got to it first.

A fast yes is not a decision.
It's the gap where a decision should be.

And the yes holds. Long after the speed wears off.
Work we would never have taken if we'd been asked slowly.

Nobody is rushing us.
We just answer like they are.

Your shift

You wake up thinking the day is yours.
Yours to spend or waste however you like.

It isn't.

Every animal alive can sleep.
You share that with the dog on your bed and the birds outside.
Nothing about staying down is distinctly yours.

The getting up is the human part.
Not because you owe the gods anything.
Because you were handed a shift in something older than you.
A thing your ancestors started and you will not live to see finished.

You keep hunting for motivation like it lives inside you.
It never did.
The reason was always other people, already awake, already counting on the work.

You are not a self with a day to fill.
You are a shift someone is waiting to relieve.

The holdup

The storm rolled in right as I reached the door.

Nothing to do but wait it out.

Went in when it settled. Wrong name at the counter.
First pen ran out of ink. The second didn't work.
Someone beside me said there's a storm out there.

When I finally stepped out the sky had broken open.
Sun already finding the road. Rain already done.

Every delay had kept me inside exactly long enough.

Sometimes the holdup is the help.

Table stakes

Family dinner. Someone says something you disagree with.
The counter-argument rises. Ready.

You could say it.
You might even be right.

But right and worth it are not the same thing.

Some conversations are invitations to drain yourself.
To trade warmth for a verdict no one asked for.

You can hold your position without holding court.

The table stays full when you let small things pass.
Not because they don't matter.
Because the people do.

Being right is easy.
Being close is harder.

Pick accordingly.

Having a self

You're about to say no.
The word is right there. Ready.

Then the voice arrives.
That's selfish.

Funny how it never speaks when you give too much.
Only when you're about to stop.

We've been taught that selfless means good.
So selfish became a weapon.

A way to keep you agreeable.
Available.
Spread thin across priorities that were never yours.

Declining isn't cruelty.
Choosing is not theft.

The voice calls it selfish because you're acting like you matter.

You do.

That's not selfishness.
That's just having a self.

More noise

You hold yourself steady in the meeting.
Measured in the conversation.
Contained at the dinner table.

Composure. Professionalism. Maturity.

All good names for the same quiet cage.

Notice how kids act?
They run for no reason.
Laugh too loud.
Spin until they fall.

No one's taught them to stay small yet.
That comes later and we call it growing up.

But the body remembers what it wants.
To move without reason.
To make sounds without a script.

Stillness has a place.
But held too long it stops being calm.

It starts being absent.

Today is a good day to be a little louder.

Not your mind

A thought arrives. You act on it.
Another follows. You obey again.

Most of us live like this. Servants to whatever the mind suggests.

But watch closely and you'll notice a gap.
The thought appears. Then a pause. Then you decide.

That pause is yours.

You are not your thoughts.
You are the one who watches them arrive.

The mind is a tool.

Mastery isn't silencing the mind.
It's choosing which voice takes the wheel.

Steady feet

You watch people cross in front of you.
Some rushing. Some changing lanes mid-step.
All of them looking like they know where they're going.

It's tempting to wonder if you missed something.
If their urgency means your stillness is wrong.

But movement isn't meaning.
Busy feet don't prove a clear head.

Seneca saw it centuries ago.
A myriad of footpaths. People wandering in every direction.
Confident noise. No signal underneath.

Your path doesn't ask for proof.
It asks for presence.

Not the absence of doubt.
Just the decision to keep walking anyway.

The clearest direction isn't the loudest.
It's the one that stays when the noise fades.

On time

At 11:18, heading out to run a few errands, I had a quiet thought.
I’ll be back home at 2:00.

Nothing intentional.
Just a loose marker in the mind.

Then the clock disappeared.
No checking. No counting. Just moving from one place to the next.

When I finally walked back through the door, I glanced down at my phone.
1:59.

We like to think time controls us.
Deadlines. Schedules. The constant pull of what’s next.

But sometimes it’s attention that sets the pace.
When you’re present, time doesn’t vanish. It settles.

Lose track of time and you might find it waiting for you.
