I acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waters on which we work and create. I pay my respects to Indigenous Elders past, present and emerging. I respectfully recognise that sovereignty was never ceded. "Australia" always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.

The handover

Nobody else knows how to do it.
You say it like a burden. You carry it like a medal.

Every decision runs through you.
Every password. Every call worth making.

It feels like proof you matter.

Nobody did that to you.

You chose it the day the handover felt slower than doing it yourself.
Then you chose it again. And again.

Being needed isn't a measure of your value.
It's a description of what you built.

And it holds right up until the morning you can't show up.

The handover you keep postponing isn't admin.
It's the last part of the job.

All at work

You've been keeping score.

Who showed up. Who didn't.
Who took more than their share and called it efficiency.

But the system holds all of that.

Not because it's soft. Because it needs it.
Every role filled. Every kind of person doing their particular kind of thing.

The gossip gossips. The cynic doubts. The corner-cutter cuts.
They're all at work.

So are you.

Stop keeping score.
Nobody's covering your shift.

Better soil

A plant doesn't argue with the season.

It doesn't petition for more sun or rail against the frost.
It works with the light it gets.
Or it doesn't. But it never wastes energy on the calendar.

We're not so generous with ourselves.
We wait for better conditions. For the hard stretch to pass.
For a better month to start becoming who we meant to be.

The season is what it is.
What are you growing in it?

Quiet hours

It's late.
The workshop is still and no one's asking for anything.

Just you and the half-finished thing.

Not for the portfolio.
Not for the story you'll tell later.
Not even because it'll work.

Because something in you needs to make it.

This is where the real growth lives.
In the hours no one sees.
The skills you build without a plan to use them.

The world asks what's the point.
But the point was never the outcome.

The point is becoming the kind of person who shows up anyway.

That's what the quiet hours are for.

Texture shift

For years I've hated the beach.
The dry sand clinging to skin like it belonged there and I didn't.

I avoided it. Made excuses.
Let the discomfort write the story.

Today was different.
Not entirely at first.

The same grit. The same itch.
The same instinct to brush it away.

But then stillness arrived.
A breath held long enough to shift something.

I stopped fighting the texture
and started feeling it.

Each grain impossibly small.
Each one part of something impossibly vast.

Like us in the universe.
Temporary. Scattered. Whole.

The sand isn't an invader.
It's a mirror.

I am the sand.
The sand is me.

Watching over

The sky had been grey all day.
Muggy. Heavy.
Nothing worth noting.

As golden hour approached, something caught my eye.
In the rearview, the light shaped almost like one.

The clouds parted.
The world began to glow.

Not a sunset.
A gaze.
Warming everything it touched.

I wasn't looking for a sign.
I was just driving home.

But there it was.
The universe watching over me.

Serious nonsense

We take everything so seriously.

The small delays. The unanswered messages. The plans that fall apart.

We act like the universe owes us smooth days.
Like chaos is a glitch instead of the default.

Absurdism says otherwise.

It doesn't ask you to stop caring.
It asks you to stop clenching.

The world won't explain itself.
It never promised to.

You can rage at that. Or you can laugh.

Not because nothing matters.
Because not everything needs to.

Some things deserve a shrug.
Maybe most things do.

Through a lens

I lifted my phone to catch the moment.
Light was right. Framing felt perfect.
Thumb hovered, ready.

In focusing on the photo, I stepped out of it.
The sound. The air. The quiet detail that only lasts a second.
All softened while I adjusted the shot.

The camera promised proof.
What it took was presence.

We reach for our phones to hold a moment still.
But sometimes the cost is the very thing we wanted to keep.
The memory forms thinner when we’re busy recording it.

Some moments don’t ask to be kept.
They ask to be lived.

In a hurry

I watch people tap their phones at the lights.
Foot twitching. Eyes already elsewhere.

The day hasn’t started and it’s already behind.

We rush meals. We skim messages. We plan answers before the question lands.
Speed feels productive. It looks like progress.

But hurry blurs the edges.
You miss the pause before someone speaks.
The moment a thought could change.
The quiet cue that tells you what actually matters.

Hurry isn’t movement. It’s noise.
It fills the gaps where meaning tends to show up.

Nothing important asks to be sprinted through.
Friendship. Learning. Healing. Good work.
They all unfold at a human pace.

Star line

While moving out I caught my hand on a box and split the skin right across my heart line.
The blood settled into the grooves of my palm in a perfect little star.
Sharp. Bright. Impossible to ignore.

Two days earlier I’d asked the cards what I needed to hear.
I pulled The Star.
A card that arrives after the dust has settled.
The one that says the worst of the storm is behind you.
You’re meant to slow down. Breathe. Reconnect.
Let your own inner compass switch back on.

So I’m standing there with my life half packed, feeling stretched thin, and my hand is literally marking me with the same symbol.
A star on the heart line.
Hope sewn straight into the body.
