Growing up isn't getting taller.
It's learning what not to feel.
We call it sophistication. Discernment.
Not being easily moved.
Last night at Cirque du Soleil my jaw fell open
and I was eight years old for an hour.
Not because the tricks were clever.
Because I forgot to protect myself from them.
That's what childhood is.
Not innocence. Not naivety.
Just the absence of armour.
The armour keeps you safe.
It also keeps everything else out.
